This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the updated system in 2025, including which rides to prioritize, how to make the most of your day, and how to avoid the dreaded stroller meltdowns and standby line regrets.

I’m Chelsea, a mom of three, a certified Disney-obsessed vacation planner, and the voice behind this blog that helps other parents make the most out of their magical time at Disney Parks without burning out. Let’s get into it.

What Replaced Animal Kingdom Genie Plus?

If you’ve been wondering what happened to Animal Kingdom Genie Plus, here’s your answer:

As of July 24, 2024, Disney officially retired Genie Plus and replaced it with two new systems: Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass.

Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows guests to pre-select up to 3 attractions in advance and then continue making additional selections after the first is used.

Lightning Lane Single Pass is for the highest-demand rides (think: Avatar Flight of Passage) and must be purchased separately.

Both options are managed in the My Disney Experience App, and for those of you wondering, I present…

Cost Breakdown (subject to change):

Multi Pass: $15–$29 per person
Single Pass (Avatar): $15–$18 per person

Booking Windows & Access Tiers

Disney Resort & Partner Hotel Guests: book up to 7 days in advance
Off-site Guests: book up to 3 days in advance

The new system rewards early planners and Disney hotel guests. Pst…if you’re staying onsite, set an alarm and get those top picks locked in.

Best Lightning Lane Multi-Pass Selections at Animal Kingdom

Here are the attractions worth grabbing first. They consistently see long lines, ESPECIALLY during peak season or early afternoon heat waves.

Top Priority Lightning Lane Rides

Na’vi River Journey – Looks peaceful, but the standby line? Not so much. This one fills up quick and tends to stay long.
Kilimanjaro Safaris – Animals are more active in the morning, and this one gets backed up fast. It’s definitely worth snagging a lightning lane if you don’t rope-drop this one.
Expedition Everest – The wait times spike quickly, and the thrill is worth the early slot.

Solid Secondary Picks

  • Kali River Rapids (especially if it’s hot out)
  • Dinosaur (still open in 2025, though DinoLand is being phased out)
  • Festival of the Lion King
  • Finding Nemo: The Big Blue…and Beyond!
  • Adventurers Outpost (Mickey & Minnie character meet)
  • The Animation Experience (interactive and air-conditioned!)
  • Conservation Station

Ride-by-Ride Strategy: What to Prioritize and Why

Avatar Flight of Passage – A breathtaking, high-demand ride. If you’re not planning to rope drop, a Single Pass is well worth it.

Na’vi River Journey – Visually stunning, slow-moving, and popular with all ages. This line builds quickly.

Kilimanjaro Safaris—More animals are out in the morning as the temps are cooler. If you’re not headed there first, save a Multi Pass for this.

Expedition Everest – A must for thrill-seekers. Single rider line available but not ideal for families.

Dinosaur – Loud, dark, and bumpy, good for older kids and teens. Get on while you can, though! Dinosaur is rumored to be leaving.

Festival of the Lion King – Great for midday breaks, but get there early because seating fills fast! Also, this show is a MUST-see.

Kali River Rapids – This one gets crazy crowded when the sun is blazing and that Florida heat hits. It is totally worth the cool-off!

The Boneyard – The Boneyard is a GREAT toddler break zone. The best part is that no Lightning Lane is needed.

  • Bring refillable water bottles and snacks to cut down on costs and whining

Lightning Lane Pricing Deep Dive

So lightning lanes cost extra in addition to the cost of the Disney World ticket, but are they worth it? And how much more do they cost? Let’s break it down:

Multi Pass: $15–$29 per person

Single Pass: $15–$18 (Flight of Passage only)

For a family of 4:

  • Multi Pass: $60–$116
  • Single Pass (x4): $60–$72
  • Total: $120–$188 for top-tier access

Is it worth it? If you’re going during peak season or have a low tolerance for long lines (raises hand), yes.

Park Hopping Strategy with Lightning Lane

Many families treat Animal Kingdom as a half-day park, especially in the off-season. If you’re planning to hop to another park, here’s how to be strategic:

  • Start early with rope drop + your 3 Multi Passes. Bonus points if you have early entry.
  • Use additional bookings as they open up
  • After 2:00 PM, start stacking Lightning Lanes in your second park
  • Ideal second park: EPCOT (proximity) or Magic Kingdom (high payoff)

When to Visit Animal Kingdom for Shorter Waits

High Crowd (Spring Break, Summer, Thanksgiving, Christmas): Get both Multi + Single Passes and plan in advance

Low Crowd (Mid-Jan, Early May, Late Aug, Early Dec): Genie+/Lightning Lane usually not needed due to shorter lines.

Medium Crowd (Late Feb, March, November): Use Multi Pass for the most popular rides.

8:00 AM – Use Multi Pass for Na’vi River Journey
9:15 AM – Use Multi Pass for Kilimanjaro Safaris
10:30 AM – Stroll through Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail and grab a snack
11:00 AM – Use Multi Pass for Expedition Everest
12:30 PM – Enjoy lunch at Flame Tree Barbecue
1:30 PM – Catch a performance of Festival of the Lion King or cool off on Kali River Rapids
3:00 PM – Character meet-and-greet at Adventurers Outpost
4:30 PM – Free time to explore, relax, or book another Lightning Lane if available

Mistakes First-Time Visitors Make at Animal Kingdom

Let’s be real, Animal Kingdom is not just “a zoo with some rides.” And if you treat it that way, you’ll end up frustrated and fried by 10:00 AM. Here are some common missteps I see all the time:

  • Not understanding how to use the Lightning Lane Multi Pass effectively (spoiler: you don’t have to wait till you’re inside the park!)
  • Skipping the walking prep. Animal Kingdom is spread out. Wear those comfy shoes, and bring an extra pair if you need too for comfort!
  • Booking dining during prime Lightning Lane return times
  • Not building in breaks like Festival of the Lion King or Gorilla Falls Trail
  • Assuming Animal Kingdom is a quick half-day park and skipping Lightning Lane entirely (this depends on season!)

Planning ahead = fewer meltdowns, better memories. Animal Kingdom is often overlooked, and yet, holds some of Disney’s BEST attractions. Take the time now to plan out your trip for that day, and you can thank me later.

Don’t Sleep on the Trails

These trails are hidden gems and deserve your time. Whether you are looking for an escape from the crowds of the day, or just a few minutes to unwind, building in time to check them out is a MUST! Best part, the trails do not discriminate between the ending of Animal Kingdom Genie Plus and the new use of Lightning Lanes, because you will not need either to access them!

  • Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail (near Safaris): shady, quiet, and perfect after an early morning ride
  • Maharajah Jungle Trek (near Kali River Rapids): gorgeous theming, tigers, and zero wait times. SCORE!

These trails are excellent for letting little ones decompress and older kids spot animals up close without the sensory overload. Bonus? There’s usually no crowd.

Plan Based on Personality: 3 Ideal Animal Kingdom Itineraries

Obviously, not everyone comes into Animal Kingdom looking for the same kind of experience. If you have different theme park personalities you are coordinating this trip for, this breakdown might help you out:

For Thrill Seekers:

  • Rope drop Flight of Passage
  • Book Multi Pass for Everest, Dinosaur, and Kali
  • Skip shows, double up rides if time allows

For Chill Explorers:

  • Start with Safari
  • Use Multi Pass for Na’vi, Festival of the Lion King, and Conservation Station
  • Enjoy slow-paced trails and sit-down meals

For Families with Littles:

  • Begin at The Boneyard
  • Meet characters at Adventurers Outpost
  • Use Multi Pass for Na’vi River, Lion King, and Kali (if the weather is warm)
  • Build in snack stops, stroller breaks, and shows

Lightning Lane Tips by Season

Since an Animal Kingdom Genie Plus strategy is no longer relevant, let me offer you some tips for Lightning Lane throughout the parks instead.

Spring Break / Summer / Holidays:

  • Book Lightning Lane early and stack aggressively
  • Prioritize high-traffic rides like Na’vi and Safari

Fall / Early Winter:

  • Moderate crowds, use Lightning Lane for comfort
  • Trails and shows can carry the day

Winter Low Season (January-Feb):

  • Lightning Lane may not be necessary if rope dropping
  • Take advantage of short standby waits to loop favorite rides

While these tips may not score a home run every time, they will help you shape your day into the most magical experience possible.

Tips for a Smoother Day

  • Use the app constantly! Real-time info is your best friend
  • Don’t over plan, but have a game plan
  • Wear breathable clothes and bring misting fans, Animal Kingdom is HOT
  • Build in breaks for snacks and shows

Note on Recent Closures

As of April 2025, It’s Tough to Be a Bug has permanently closed to make way for a future Zootopia-themed attraction coming to the Tree of Life theater. And over in DinoLand U.S.A., major changes are underway. TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures have all permanently closed, and the land is being transformed into a new Tropical Americas area featuring Encanto and Indiana Jones-themed attractions. DINOSAUR is still open for now, but it’s expected to close in late 2025.

If you’ve visited in the past and loved these experiences, you’re not imagining things. They’re definitely on their way out. It seems that with the ending of Animal Kingdom Genie Plus also came the ending of an era for some of these classics. If you’re visiting soon, this may be your last chance to see them!

FAQs

What’s the difference between Animal Kingdom Genie Plus and Lightning Lane Multi Pass?
Genie Plus was Disney’s previous ride reservation system, which the Lightning Lane Multi Pass has now replaced. The new system allows guests to make advance ride selections and offers a clearer tier-based structure specific to each park, including Animal Kingdom.

Can I stack Lightning Lane reservations?
Yes! After your first selection is used, keep booking one at a time throughout the day. It’s like a rolling fast pass system, and it works best when you’re quick on the app.

What if a ride goes down during my window?
You’ll get a flexible return option in the app. Either for the same attraction once it’s running again or another eligible attraction in the same tier.

Is Lightning Lane worth it with DAS?
It depends. If you have DAS and a solid game plan, you might not need it. But stacking Lightning Lane with DAS can help you cover more ground, especially on busy days.

Just a few more FAQ’s

Can I book Lightning Lane in a second park?
Yes! After 2:00 PM, you can start booking Lightning Lane reservations in a different park if you have a Park Hopper ticket.

Do I need a park reservation to visit Animal Kingdom in 2025?
As of early 2025, reservations are no longer required for date-based tickets. However, Annual Passholders and undated ticket holders may still need to make a reservation, depending on the ticket type. Always check the My Disney Experience app for the latest.

Is Rider Switch available at Animal Kingdom?
Yes! Rider Switch is available for most height-restricted attractions, including Expedition Everest and DINOSAUR. Just ask a Cast Member at the ride entrance to set it up. Great for parents taking turns with little ones.

What’s the best way to get to Animal Kingdom in the morning?
Disney buses begin running 45–60 minutes before Early Theme Park Entry. If you want to rope drop Flight of Passage, a rideshare like Uber or Lyft can get you there ahead of the resort crowd.

Can I re-ride attractions using Lightning Lane?
Nope, unfortunately not. Lightning Lane selections are one-time use per attraction per day. If you want to ride again, you’ll need to use the standby line or single rider line if available (like on Everest).

Is PhotoPass available at Animal Kingdom?
Yes! There are photographers stationed at key points like the Tree of Life, Pandora, and character meet locations. If you’ve purchased Memory Maker, this is an easy win for family photos with no lines.

Beyond the Rides: Shopping, Shows & Soaking in the Magic

If there’s one thing most people don’t expect from Animal Kingdom, it’s how breathtakingly beautiful it is. This park was made for wandering. For stopping, for watching and for noticing. Here are the moments and spaces worth slowing down for:

Tree of Life in Disney World Animal Kingdom Genie Plus strategy guide

The Tree of Life

Honestly, you can’t miss this one, even if you tried. But you also can’t fully appreciate it unless you pause. The carvings are intricate, detailed, and best viewed from every angle. Walk around it slowly. At night, catch the Tree of Life Awakenings: a projection show that brings the whole thing to life with animals, light, and color. No Lightning Lane required. Just pure magic and vibes.

Street Shows & Cultural Performers

Throughout the day, you’ll find musicians and dancers popping up in Africa and Asia. These aren’t just filler—they’re part of what makes Animal Kingdom feel alive. The Tam Tam Drummers of Harambe? Absolutely worth stopping for. Kids will dance. Adults will groove. Everyone will smile.

Best Views in the Park

  • Pandora at Night – Bioluminescent walkways and floating mountains? YES PLEASE.
  • Flame Tree BBQ seating area – Grab a bite and sit by the water with views of Everest in the distance.
  • Discovery Island Trails – Hidden pathways that loop near the Tree of Life and lead to stunning photo ops that most people miss.

Where to Shop

Animal Kingdom has some of the most unique merchandise in Disney World.

  • Windtraders (in Pandora): Custom Avatar banshees, glowing forest gear, and science-inspired toys.
  • Island Mercantile: The main hub for plush, tees, and essentials.
  • Mombasa Marketplace: Gorgeous handcrafted pieces, especially jewelry and woven goods. This shop is PERFECT if you want something that doesn’t scream Disney but still carries the magic.

Pro Tip: If your kids see something they love, grab it. Animal Kingdom merch often differs from the rest of Walt Disney World; It’s easy to miss out if you wait to circle back.
